When new and unknown things come into our hands, the first thing we do is ask what it is. However, we don’t always get answers. You might have found this new artifact hidden at home, at a garage sale, or even in the trash, but it seemed attractive or intriguing enough that you wanted to keep it. An older person may be confused about what an IPod is or a centenial kid may not recognize a cassette player, but with the objects that we will show you, we take it to a new level. It’s this kind of thing that only a specialist would recognize, or you might find it with a simple Google search. Even so, we are sure that you will be surprised with the following discoveries.
1-. “What is this screwdriver-like tool for?”
Answer: “This is a handle from a set of wood carving knives.”
2-. “It looks like a metal medallion, but it has names of saints for each cell below the glass. What is?”.
Answer: “This thing is called teak. The relics of the saints are usually placed in it. If this teak is real, it could be worth a lot of money.”
3-. “I found this strange metal thing in the park. I tried to google what it was but to no avail.”
Answer: “This is a bag carrier that dog owners take for walks to clean up after their pet.”
4-. “I found a box with eight wheels, similar to the ones that are put on bicycles. What could it be?”
Answer: “These are rollers for setting up an old sewing machine.”
5-. “I found this collapsible plastic thing at work. There is a US Customs Service logo on the side. What is?”
Answer: “It’s a DVD case.”
6-. “A small rectangle of jade with rounded corners and a small indentation on one side.”
Answer: “It is an inkstone.”
7-. “I found this glass hexagon and I don’t know what it is. It looks like a decorative element because it has a hole in one of its corners”.
Answer: “It is one of the details of a chandelier or wall light.”
8-. “I found this piece of metal on the river bank near my house. It looks old but I don’t know what it is.
Answer: “This is a guard from an old dagger.”
9-. “I found a very interesting little thing on the table at my new workplace.”
Answer: It is a tool to remove the keys from the keyboard”.
10-. “I saw this game in an antique store in France.”
Answer: “They are fishing artifacts and they are called kwok. They hit the water to attract catfish.”
eleven-. “A small but quite heavy metal record. I think it’s made of tungsten. On one side there is a drawing and there are “plus” and “minus” signs.
Answer: “This is a thyristor, a radio component whose primary function is to control a high-power electrical current.”
12-.“I saw this creepy iron thing in an agricultural museum. There was no guide around so I never knew what it was.”
Answer: “An old bull mask. It was used on the bull during mating, so that it would not see and attack people and other animals.
13-. “I found this appliance in the kitchen of a house we recently bought”
Answer: “It’s a barbecue pan.”
14-. “I bought these things at a flea market. They are quite heavy and look old. maybe they have some value
Answer: “They are weights for cuckoo clocks.”
fifteen-. “This bronze fish-shaped brooch opens like a clothespin. Why?”
Answer: “Chain clip for a pocket watch.”
16-. “A small round box with glass beads inside. The numbers are drawn on the balls. Any idea what it could be?
Answer: “This is an old alcohol hygrometer.”
