Having Robert Rodríguez back at the helm of a new feature film is always fantastic news. The one from San Antonio has become on its own merits a filmmaker as diverse as he is effective in different genres and productions of all kinds And now, after his forays into family movies, ambitious anime adaptations, and even the ‘Star Wars’ universe, he’s going to get more Hitchcockian than ever.
On these lines you can see the trailer for ‘Hypnotic’, a film in which has joined forces with Ben Affleck to shape a thriller that drinks from classics like ‘Psycho’ or ‘Vertigo’ —according to Rodríguez himself— and who has been in the director’s bedroom for a whopping 20 years. The result, judging by what was seen in the preview, looks very intense and interesting.
Come on, Robert, go dancing.
‘Hypnotic’, which could be seen without finishing in the last edition of SXSW revolves around a detective -played by Affleck- who will find himself involved in the investigation of crimes that defy all logic and that, apparently, are connected to his missing daughter. If we add to the equation a woman with psychic abilities and a generous dose supernaturalthe result could not be more appetizing.
Before its first screening, Rodríguez spoke about the production process of the film, and his words promise, in a way, a return to its origins in which improvisation and the guerrilla style were the order of the day:
“I was talking to Ben, and I said, ‘Ben, man, this is going to be the ’90s again!’ Remember when we used to shoot full speed, no strings attached, guerrilla style, handheld and running for 22 days?’ I was really happy to have Ben, Ben’s the best. He was like, ‘Yeah man, I spend so much time doing nothing on set I thought no one shoots like that anymore.’ Well, we don’t have a choice.”
After spending a couple of years in post-production without ever finding distribution in the United States, ‘Hypnotic’ will hit theaters in the North American country on May 12. Let’s hope he arrives sooner rather than later in these lands to be able to enjoy the “hilarious trip full of unexpected twists” that good old Robert promises.
