Although the current fun for Netflix has been triggered by its package of measures to end shared accounts, for me, the platform had already filled the camel’s back long before. It was last November, with the arrival of its basic package with ads. And is that,At what point have we normalized paying to see advertising? I didn’t really realize what it was until I tried it and spoiler: I ended up thinking for the first time in many years about downloading eMule again. But let’s go in parts.
Or subscription of 5.49 euros with ads or plan of 12.99 euros without?
Since the beginning of this platform, I have always been one of those intermittent Netflix users who pay subscriptions for individual months when there is something in particular that they are interested in watching. And to that I went in November when the episodes of the Wednesday from Tim Burton (whom, on top of that, he had just met in person) and Jenna Ortega.
That month the basic package with ads had also just been launched in Spain, for 5.49 euros and, although the idea horrified me, the equivalent without ads (at a price of 7.99 euros) that always contract had disappeared from the page. Months later he would discover that, in reality, it still existed but they have hidden it among the small print that nobody reads. But that’s another topic…
The fact is that, as they intended, I thought that my two best options were reduced to the already mentioned basic with ads or else we already skipped to the standard, for 12.99 euros per month. The price difference between the two more than doubled and my expense control excel decided for me. So embracing an attitude Yolo, I convinced myself that this was a new experience and not another way of making my life even more precarious.
What I ordered vs what I received
On paper, the offer didn’t have to be that bad either.. I consume the platform’s content from a computer monitor, so the 720p resolution is more than enough for me and the fact that it doesn’t allow downloads doesn’t affect me either because I don’t usually watch anything offline.
As for many, the main drawback is the ads. However, I thought the experience would be similar to that of YouTube. I mean, as annoying as it is to be interrupted when you’re immersed in something, most ads could be skipped after a few seconds, right?
Well no. For those who are wondering, the ads on Netflix are not like on YouTube but very, very similar to those on television of a lifetime. For a start, can never be passed under any circumstances. However, worst of all is that I couldn’t even leave them playing in the background while taking the opportunity to do other things on the computer. As soon as the page starts playing in the background, the player automatically pauses. That is to say, either you take the opportunity to go to the bathroom, or you have to swallow every second of each ad, yes or yes.
In addition, they arrive in packages of several spots together and no, they are not reduced versions and adapted to their medium. Also, the outages are very frequent and much more annoying than I had expected. really was an authentic unbearable déjà vu to another era to which I think no one wants to returnwith the difference that on television they still let you change the channel when the commercials arrive.
Conclusion
I would never, under any circumstances, pay to watch Netflix with ads. It doesn’t make up for it and I’m not exaggerating if I say that I downloaded eMule first. Making a simile, for me It’s comparable to being made to pay to use the free version of Spotify. Only, in addition, in that version of Spotify with ads for which you now pay, there would be some records that, due to licensing issues, you could not listen to (some of the content is banned in the basic plan with Netflix ads for this reason). .
To view audiovisual content with ads and for free, in fact, there are already platforms such as Plextv, Pluto TV or Rakuten, among others. It’s a fair trade: the way to pay for a free service has always been to swallow ads that brands have already paid the platform for. However, paying an amount for the subscription and also seeing the ads is paying twice. The living example that cheap is expensive. Don’t do it, that’s my advice, because of how uncomfortable it is and because of principles.
