Receiving education is a human right and in many countries it is free and even compulsory. However, not all people have easy access to education and for various reasons, they cannot continue with their studies or must abandon them at a very early age. But there are those who never give up and look for a way to continue studying because they really want to learn and grow.
Thompson is one of them because he was able to get to university thanks to the books he took out of the garbage. The young man studied with those texts that other people discarded; and as they say out there: the trash of some is the treasure of others. So, to the 15 yearsVitor passed an exam that allowed him to enter a school, using only the books he found in the trash.
It is originally from Paco da Patriaa region of the city of Nativenortheast of Brazil. There she lived with his parents, who had modest jobs; her mother is a garbage collector and separates recyclables to sell, while her father makes sandwiches. Neither of them could finish primary school and being poor, they wanted his son to start working with them from a young age. However, Thompson knew that he wanted to continue studying, so his parents decided to support him.
This is how his mother began to bring him the books she found in the trash.
Being part of her job, the woman found a relatively easy way to help her son. Every time she could, she brought him a book to read and learn everything she could.
And in 2015Thompson got the best grade in the examination of Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN) to enter to study Multimedia. The young man had to make a lot of effort because he got up very early every day because he had to go 6 kilometers on his bike to get to school. Returning home, she studied and helped his parents with his work. Rosangela, his mother, was a key player in the formation of the young man, as he took up the habit of reading thanks to all the books she gave him. Although both parents always wanted his son to dedicate himself to the family business.
“They want me to get a job early. I always say that I need to dedicate myself to my studies. I even help my mother with her work, but as long as she does not interfere with my studies », Vitor explained in 2015 during an interview with G1. “I am very proud of my parents. I know how much they suffered to raise me. Not only me, but also my brothers. They overcame the adversities of life, economic problems and gave up their moments of pleasure to take care of everyone, “he added.
In the end, everyone’s efforts paid off.
The moving story became very popular in Brazil and served as an example to such an extent that the Itau Social Foundation Banco Itaú Unibanco used it as part of its “Read for a Child” campaign.
For his part, Thompson was able to secure a scholarship from the Farias Brito Educational Organization to continue his studies at the IFRN. At first, his idea was to study law because he wanted to become a lawyer, but in the end a twist occurred.
The young man preferred to study the career of chemistry and thanks to his talent, he now has a place in the University of Rochester, in New York, USA. from the year 2019Vitor is studying this degree and hopes to graduate in 2023.
