When we sit in a stall to see a movie like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’, what ends up reaching our retinas is an explosion of creativity projected in part on a collection of the most diverse creatures and characters. What remains hidden behind the spectacle are the endless pre-shoot characterization sessionswhich sometimes end up becoming little less than torture.
Turds worth their weight in gold
During an interview with IndieWire, the actor Chukwudi Iwujiwho has given life to the infamous villain of the show, the High Evolutionary, has explained how was the process to shape your species of “Robocop”, as they call him in the feature film. The experience, of course, could not have been very pleasant.
“The first day I put it on it took about two hours, but after a couple of weeks it was down to 70 minutes. It was prosthetics blended into my skin. They had two pieces of prosthetics, one that went up here for the upper part of the head and another that went up here for the part of the chin.
They made it look like you didn’t know where my skin ended and the prosthetics began, so it all got mixed up. It wasn’t uncomfortable and I could use my face normally. It was all about finding the right material that would move with my skin, so that when I performed it wouldn’t get hot or hard. They were brilliant. They were investigating throughout the shoot.”
Who also contributed their two cents in this regard was Will Poulterwho took it upon himself to play Adam Warlock under a good coat of gold paint.
“It was just a gold tank, and they just waited for me to dry by leaving me in the sun. It was paint and a spray, rollers…they did everything. It was a little longer process because there were so many layers of gold. You can wrap a turd with glitter, that’s what I mean.”
The truth is that the results speak for themselves.
