After eight games, Bayer is third from last in the championship, with five points and only one victory against five defeats.
“In Xabi Alonso, we hired a coach who was for many years a world-class professional, an intelligent strategist and crowned with success in three of the most difficult leagues in Europe,” said the club’s sporting director Simon Rolfes.
Xabi Alonso returns to the Bundesliga, in which he finished his career as a professional player in 2017 after three seasons with Bayern Munich and three championship titles.
“From my time in Germany, I remember Leverkusen as an excellent club,” Alonso was quoted as saying in the statement.
The club hadalways great players and I also see a lot of quality in the current team“, estimated.
“I have quickly understood in my conversations with the club that, despite the current difficult situation, the team continues to have ambitious goals,” he adds. “This task tempts me a lot and I am sure that we will arrive” to achieve those objectives.
The sports director thanked Gerardo Seoane, who did “a good job for about a year and a half”.
But “unfortunately we have strayed from the path of success,” something the team intends to remedy by changing coaches, he said.
