Science is becoming more and more advanced and looking for ways to implement new strategies that help you study human behavior through your brain. To do so, a group of scientists transplanted structures similar to the miniature human brain into rats in order to learn about the neurological disorders that a person can present.

According to a study shared on the Nature site, a group of scientists from Stanford University, in California, United States, transplanted human brain cells into newborn rats in order to study the neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders that humans develop.

However, the organoids implemented in rats will not fully mimic the human brain, as they will not develop blood vessels. Therefore, they cannot receive nutrients, that is, they will not receive the stimulation necessary to fully grow as a baby’s brain does.

To stimulate the brain organoids, the team of researchers grew the structures of the “mini brains” from human stem cells, with the aim that both cells grow together. To learn how the transplant works, the scientists placed the organoids in a part of the rats’ brain called the somatosensory cortex, an area where the animals can send signals through their whiskers and other sensory organs.

Because human brain cells mature more slowly than those of rats, the researchers had to wait just over six months for the organoids to integrate into the rat brain to be successful.

Although the implementation of this new feat of biological engineering in rats has been favorable and has the scientists in charge excited, the transplant procedure is still expensive and complex enough to make it a model or prototype research tool.

It’s an important step in allowing organoids to tell us more complex properties of the brain.
