On October 16, Roberto Monroy, Secretary of Tourism for the state of Michoacán, Mexico, announced on his social networks the sad news of the death of María Salud Ramírez Caballero, the beautiful grandmother who is said to have inspired the character of Mama Coco in Pixar animated film Coconut. He had just turned 109 years old, last September.

We suppose that now that the beautiful old lady has departed, she will be able to rejoin her ancestors. In addition, her photo will surely be placed on the next altar of the dead that her family will make to remember her deceased, with which they will pay her a small tribute to always carry her in her heart.

María lived in a picturesque little town in the Mexican state of Michoacán, called Santa Fe de la Laguna. The woman became famous for being the spitting image of Mama Coco, as many claim that the Disney production was based on her to develop the iconic character of the animated movie.

His life was spent between sorrows and joys. With a smile, she prepared herself to face the arduous work of each day, since, like almost all the inhabitants of the Michoacán plateau, Mrs. María was a potter. With her magical hands, she and her husband made beautiful clay objects, characteristic of the peoples of Mexico.

I deeply regret the death of Doña María Salud Ramírez Caballero, “Mamá Coco”, a tireless woman and example of life, who was the inspiration for this beloved character who went around the world. My prayers for her rest and for her family to find resignation
