I must confess that, during the last few months, I have developed a great fondness —if it cannot be called an obsession— to scrutinize and analyze the international box office. And it is that, the more you immerse yourself in the dance of figures and as you begin to understand the mechanisms and trends that move collection gears and percentages, the more fascinating and satisfying it becomes to do it.

the color of money

But, as much as you enjoy browsing through millions of dollars, hits and hits, there is no doubt that, in this seventh art, the box office it is not all. And I don’t say it, but the teacher Martin Scorsese, who has described today’s box office fixation as “repulsive” and “insulting” on his way through the latest edition of the New York Film Festival. This is how he explained the problem.

“The focus has been on numbers since the ’80s. It’s kind of repulsive. The cost of a movie is one thing. I understand that a movie costs a certain amount and they hope to make back at least that amount… The emphasis now is on the numbers, the budget, the opening weekend, how much it’s made in the US, how much it’s made in England, how much it’s made in Asia, how much it’s grossed worldwide, how many viewers it’s had. As a person who can’t imagine the world without cinema, I’ve always found it very insulting.”

Once again, good old Marty has more reason than a saint; but he is not the only filmmaker who has manifested a similar stance towards this excessive focus on the chrematistic aspects of cinema. Without going any further, Edgar Wright has already addressed the issue using as an example his great ‘Scott Pilgrim against the world’, which had a really disappointing debut, but continues to be praised to this day.

“I’ve said this to other filmmakers who may have had a first reaction to a movie like ‘Scott Pilgrim,’ and that is that the three-day weekend isn’t the end of the story for any feature film. People I shouldn’t buy into that idea. Most of my favorite movies that are considered classics today weren’t hits in their time.

You can point to hundreds of classic movies, whether it’s ‘Citizen Kane’ or ‘Blade Runner’ or ‘The Big Lebowski.’ How a movie does in its first three days isn’t the end of the story, and the further we get from that talk about box office numbers being the entirety of a movie, the better.”
