Movies often end up accidentally concatenating with real-life events, sometimes interestingly rhyming with current affairs or even anticipating changes to come. And it’s accidental, because no one who works on a movie really has predictability, and making one takes a long time, even years, until it gets to the public.

This does not mean that some cases cease to be fascinating. Like, for example, India finally achieving independence from the British in August 1947, when only a few months earlier it had been released in England. an important film that can be seen as the farewell to a vanished empire after a failed attempt to radically change a foreign culture. That tension, apart from many others, nourishes ‘Narciso Negro’, a masterful film that we can recover through Prime Video (and also on Filmin and Movistar+).

The film was written, produced and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, better known as the creative -and also business- duo The Archers. authors of several of the most transcendental and excellent films in the history of cinema. ‘Black Narcissus’ is one of several masterpieces by him, performing an impressive psychological drama that explores not only territorial tensions, but also religious and sexual ones.

The story centers on a group of Anglican nuns from the Order of the Servants of Mary, who head to the remote Himalayan mountains at the invitation of General Toda Rai, an Indian ruler recruited by the British Empire. Your goal is set up a school and a hospital in an ancient palace located in these mountains, although you will find decoration charged with eroticism derived from its former status as a refuge for the general’s father’s harem.

But that will not be your only problem in your transfer and in the formation of your institution. They will encounter various economic difficulties to carry out the company, in addition to the rejection and hostility of the native population. To mediate these latest problems, a British envoy (David Farrar) arrives to offer diplomatic solutions, although unexpectedly it will generate a strong erotic charge in the sisters of the order, especially Sister Clodagh (Deborah Kerr) and Sister Ruth ( Kathleen Byron).

‘Black Daffodil’: powerful atmosphere in full color

Not only is the film beautifully written to play out all of these conflicts well, leaving behind a fascinating study of occupation as well as repression of impulses, but The Archers’ excellent visual technique makes it a majestic thing that you can never stop contemplating. The incredible use of Technicolor, duly awarded at the Oscars for Best Cinematography, enhances each frame and gives more power to the incredible atmosphere they develop.

Their incredible use of color in their films since the mid-1940s has added an interesting layer to films from that period. ‘Black Narcissus’, like many of Powell and Pressburger’s films, manages to reflect the incredible feeling of being overwhelmed by beauty, which together with the sexual tension experienced by these nuns remains one of the best explorations of eroticism on screen. And that’s without getting into Kerr’s amazing work in acting. A simply impeccable film on all levels.
