Once again, advances in medicine have made it possible for parents to regain their peace of mind after going through many moments of anguish, since Emma, their 13-month-old daughter, has just recovered her health after receiving the first intestine transplant that is done in the world.

Of course, we cannot forget that all this was possible due to the generosity of a family that decided to donate the organs of a patient who had just died. Now Emma will be able to access a better quality of life.

The little girl was diagnosed with an intestinal failure a month after she was born, so she was transferred to the Intestinal Rehabilitation Unit at Hospital La Paz, in Madrid, Spain, since she had a type of intestine that doctors call ultrashort. The health professionals tried everything they could at the time, but said the only thing that could help her was a transplant.

Emma was fed intravenously, but the little girl’s condition was not very encouraging, since the doctors say that they noticed her losing weight every time. The girl was deteriorating rapidly waiting for a graft that didn’t come, so she decided to try something that had never been done before: an intestine transplant.

The doctors at the Hospital de La Paz, in Madrid, carried out a three-year investigation to carry out this operation, which became the first intestine transplant after a donation in asystole.

Asystole is a technique that is applied after confirmation of the clinical death of a person after the irreversible cessation of cardiorespiratory functions. That person’s organs are maintained by extracorporeal oxygenation, a mechanism by which the use of solid organs that would otherwise be lost is possible.

It is the first time that the technique has been tried with an intestine, so there was a risk that the operation would not be successful. Fortunately, everything went very well and the beautiful Emma is in perfect health. The doctors took the opportunity to remind us of the importance of considering organ donation.

In Spain, all the transplants that are carried out are carried out thanks to many professionals who participate, contributing a great deal of experience and professionalism, but, above all, all this is possible thanks to the generosity of families who, in one of the worst moments of their lives, decide to say yes to organ donation

"parents

It is extremely encouraging to learn that many other patients will be able to benefit from the successful results of this research in the future. Emma’s father, visibly moved, expressed his feelings for what her family was experiencing.

I want to thank first of all the professional work of this team and I want to thank the donor’s family, who has given life to the three of us.
