Much of Ryan Murphy’s success as (former) television’s King Midas has been built on the lurid, exploration of tortured psyches. One of his first hits was ‘Nip/Tuck, at the stroke of a scalpel‘, which twisted medical drama through satirical comedy, crime and horror. A game between the disturbing and the frivolous that has evolved into what we see in ‘Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story’.

Its recent irregularity has made the balance of the components work less, causing these projects to be seen as strange and even irresponsible fetishes. Nothing to do, for example, with what he does so well in projects like ‘American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace’, where he is able to study and portray both serial killers and the culture and society from which they feed. while doing stimulating and entertaining television.

It’s a crime

This miniseries available on Disney + continues in its own way what started in ‘American Crime Story: The People v. OJ Simpson’, perhaps today the most incontestable miniseries/project of Murphy. Completely changing the story, the characters and the cast (even the writing and directing teams are different) try to do something essentially similar, uncovering the shame of American society through the most shocking crimes and that dominated the television news.

In this case it is the death of the illustrious designer Gianni Versace. The title makes it clear that this is not so much an exploration of his life as what has led to his murder, which has little (or everything) to do with what he has come to do. That is why the leading role, or almost the connective tissue of the series, is carried by the murderer Andrew Cunanan, played fabulously by Darren Criss.

The series also takes risky decision to follow the reverse chronological direction, starting with the climactic murder and going back in time to present the other murders that Cunanan carried out on people with less cartel than Versace. Those “others” were not his idol, but they were important because they were motivated by the same pattern of crime against the gay community.

‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace’: Going Back

The hatred towards the LGTBI represents an important pillar in how he decides to tell the story of the serial killer, showing how it was reproduced during the nineties, including embarrassing episodes such as the official policy of “Don’t ask, don’t tell” in the Armed Forces. Hatred that leads to self-hatred, embodied in a Cunanan is a search for approval and freedom (and also attention) to be the same but seeing how he was constantly denied until he led to psychopathy.

"What

The series tries to be careful not to justify the criminal’s motivations, showing moral as well as narrative complexity. His way of structuring the story seems to work against him, but he achieves a very interesting exercise that prevents us from becoming too fond of the protagonist and maintains the thematic and narrative strength for the most part. Definitely, better thought out and developed than most recent Murphy series.
