The fantastic universe of the Disney factory has given us films that have been etched in our memories, accompanying the childhood of entire generations. In general, these are stories full of values and always have a happy ending. But the original versions of children’s stories, have little to do with the innocence shown by Disney. Examples of this are many. From Little Red Riding Hood, cannibalistic and devoured by the wolf, to Sleeping Beauty, raped while she slept. The legend of Mulán also has, as expected, another version. The production house was inspired in this case by a real young woman, whose actions completely left the current paradigms. Join us to learn the true story of Mulan.

And it is that, if you count yourself among the admirers of the beautiful stories that weave the past of China, that of Hua Mulan rises above others with its own voice due to its magnetism and its strength. In a social context in which women always occupy a secondary position, in the shadow of men, this young woman was able to make an amazing difference. Today We invite you to travel with us to that ancient China, full of heroes and heroines, to learn about the legend of Mulan.

Discover the true story of Mulan

We know that throughout history there have always been brave women. But on most occasions they have remained in the shadow of the great deeds or of those odes that preferred to extol, however, courageous male heroes. The knowledge we have today about the true history of Mulan is basically due to an epic poem written by Yueh-Fu, an ode collected in late times of the Ming dynasty within a novel that showed interesting ballads like the one dedicated to this heroine.

But, at what time can we place what happened or extolled by this poem? The truth is that it is not entirely clear in what period it takes place. There are theories that tell us that this story must have occurred during the Northern Wei dynasty, between the years 386-534. Now, another version defends that the most probable thing in the legend of Mulán, is that the young woman was actually the concubine of Emperor Sui Yangdi, who reigned between 604 and 617. It is not clear. However, what we do know is what happened, which was specifically what fueled his name and his legend, passing to posterity.

What is the legend of Mulan?

To reveal the true story of Mulan, we need to travel to the north of Chinato scenarios such as the Black Mountain or the Yellow River. Hua Mulan is a young girl who decides to replace her own father in the army, because he is already too old and weak.. And he achieves it after hard efforts, after a lot of physical preparation and training, where, effectively, he manages to be at the same level as any other soldier.

But there is still more to the legend of Mulan. In battle, the girl demonstrates virtues that make her stand out above them all. Hua Mulan does not have little dragons to talk to here as the Walt Disney movie showed us. On the contrary, she is alone, she suffers and makes an effort daily not to be underestimated and even less discovered, but, above all, to represent her own father as if he were just another man.

After the war, our brave soldier is called by the emperor to be rewarded. In this story Mulan is not unmasked for being a woman, what’s more, the only thing she asks is to be able to return to her house with a horse (in other versions the word “donkey” appears instead of “horse”). And so she does it, she returns home happy for having done well and not having been discovered. But this fact is discovered shortly after her, when her army comrades come to visit her. almost speechless, Those men discover that their often rude and brave companion with whom they lived for twelve years… was really a woman. And this is how the true story of Mulan ends…

As we told you, the legend of Mulán became known and transcended from generation to generation, thanks to a poem. An Ode that summarizes the experience and honors the effort of this young woman. If you are interested in knowing it, you can read it below.

Ode to Mulan, by Yueh-fu

"legend

Insects celebrate the afternoon with their song.
Mulan is weaving at the door.
The shuttle cannot be heard turning,
only the cries of the girl.
They ask where his heart is.
They ask where your thought is.
He’s thinking of nothing
if not in King Kong, her beautiful beloved.
The army list occupies twelve rolls
and his father’s name is on all of them.

There is no older son for the father,
an older brother than Mulan.
“I will go buy a horse and a saddle,
I will come to fight for our father.”
He has bought in the East a horse of size,
has bought a chair and cushion in the west,
has bought a bridle in the south
he has bought a good whip in the north.

At dawn he says goodbye to his father and mother;
when night falls, he camps by the Yellow River.
He no longer hears the call of his father and mother,
just the splash of the horse in the water.
At dawn it leaves the Yellow River;
when night falls, he reaches the Black Mountain.
He no longer hears the call of his father and mother,
just the horses neighing in the bush.

He crossed thousands of miles in search of war,
He ran as if flying through passes and mountains,
the gusts of the north wind brought iron sounds,
armor gleamed in the moonlight.
There the generals fighting a hundred battles
they died, and after giving ten years
the soldiers returned home bravely.

On her way back, she is received by the Son of the Sun,
who sits in the Hall of Radiances.
He awards him medals for his many merits,
offers you crispy duck wings by the thousands.
The Khan has asked him what he wants to do now.
“Mulan doesn’t need official honors,
give me a robust donkey with very light hooves
and send me back to my parents’ house.”

When her parents hear that their daughter is approaching,
the two go out to see her, elbowing each other.
When her sister hears that her sister is coming,
is arranged and placed in front of the door.
When his brother hears that his sister is approaching,
Sharpen the knife, slaughter a lamb.

“I have opened the door of my eastern room,
and in the western I have sat on the bed.
I took off the armor I wore in the war
and I have put on the clothes I once wore.
In front of the mirror, near the window
I have combed my tangled hair
and I have adorned my forehead with golden petals.”
When Mulan came out before her comrades,
everyone was surprised, perplexed.
Twelve years they were with her in the army
and no one knew it was a girl.

The rabbit’s legs jump more,
the female’s eyes are somewhat smaller,
but when you see a couple running through the field,
Who can tell the hare from the rabbit?
