Much is being said these days about HBO Max’s decision to cancel ‘Batgirl’ when the DC movie had already finished filming and was in the process of post-production. The curious thing is that very few are remembering that Netflix already faced a similar situation when he decided to get rid of ‘gore’ 5 years ago. Of course, in his case the reason for the cancellation was not taxes and he had his own name: Kevin Spacey.

Kevin Spacey’s fall from grace

After being accused of sexual harassment – later more accusations would come -, Spacey’s career went to waste. Well known are the cases of ‘All the money in the world’, where Ridley Scott decided to reshoot all of Spacey’s scenes with Christopher Plummer, and ‘House of Cards’, initially canceled and then resumed with a shortened final season and without the actor’s participation.

Less popular is what happened with ‘Gore’, a biopic in which Spacey gave life to Gore Vidal, a popular writer who died in 2012. The recordings of the film directed by Michael Hoffmann -‘The last station’- had already finished and in its distribution they also participated Michael Stuhlbergwho at the time commented that he understood what was happening but hopefully one day the film could be seen, Freya Mavor, Griffin Dunne or Douglas Booth.

Everything was going well until the scandal starring Spacey led Netflix to cut ties with ‘Gore’, a film that was scheduled to be released in 2018 and that told the story of how a young man spent a summer in Italy, where he met Gore Vidalwho gave him valuable lessons about life, love and politics.

Netflix opted for lock up the film, bear the losses -although surely some financial engineering used to save something on taxes- and go ahead. They can’t be blamed for something like that either, as the bad press didn’t make up for the potential success of ‘Gore’. And that if he got to have it, because in 2018 it was released in theaters ‘The Young Billionaires’ Club’ Despite everything that happened, a movement that can only be described as catastrophic given its ridiculous performance at the box office.
