Last Saturday, June 4, Katya Echazarreta, a 26-year-old electrical and computer engineer from Guadalajara, Mexico, became the first Mexican woman to travel to space.

The now astronaut was selected among more than seven thousand participants from 100 different countries to be part of the Blue Origin company’s NS-21 mission.

“I want to dedicate this flight to space to my country, and to the entire Latin American community. My wish is that you see this mission, believe in yourself, and know that you can be the next one,” – Katya Echazarreta (@katvoltage) pic.twitter.com/84oy91YqdG

Echazarreta is originally from Guadalajara, Mexico. At the age of seven and not knowing English, she moved to the United States with her family. There, a teacher warned her that she might have to repeat the course and from that moment her life changed for her, she demanded twice as much to prepare herself, be better and achieve her dreams: knowing space.

At the age of 17, he became the main breadwinner in his family with a salary from McDonald’s. Her responsibilities did not stop her and she continued to prepare, attending a public high school and simultaneously taking Electrical Engineering classes at a community college. In the end, she managed to graduate from the University of California, Los Angeles as an electrical and computer engineer and had the opportunity to work at NASA’s famous Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.

Space, math, astronomy and physics have interested me for as long as I can remember and I never lost sight of that growing up.

Echazarreta currently has more than 330,000 followers on TikTok, hosts a science-focused YouTube series, hosts the CBS weekend show, Mission Unstoppableand is studying for a master’s degree in engineering at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

As for the NS-21 mission, the flight was initially scheduled for Friday, May 20. However, that same week, Blue Origin published that it postponed the trip due to a failure in the backup systems. In the end, the mission was carried out on June 4 and was a complete success.

Echazarreta was the first to board the ship. At 8:26 am (Mexico City time), the spacecraft was in full liftoff and at 8:36 am, the crew was already back on Earth, after 10 minutes out of orbit.
