One of the questions that many Star Wars fans have asked is, when were the clone troopers replaced by the soldiers that the empire recruited?

At the end of the Star Wars prequels, the Empire had a large army made up of clone troopers, however it was eventually replaced by normal human soldiers, something that is explored in the animated series. the bad consignment (The BadBatch) and the new Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

In the aftermath of the formation of the Empire and the events of Order 66, Palpatine wields his power across the galaxy, changing the old systems of the Republic, into a dictatorship, in order to “put order in the galaxy«. We could see this process in the animated series of the bad consignment and continued until the events of the original Star Wars trilogy, at which point any vestige of the old Republic was removed.

The Jango Fett clones that made up the Grand Army of the Republic were one such remnant. Although the clone troopers served Palpatine’s purposes perfectly during the Clone Wars, they became a liability to his new order. In Obi-Wan Kenobi we saw a veteran of the Republic (played by Temuera Morrison) begging on the streets, the post-war period and the early days of the Empire did not end well for the clone army.

Why were the Clones replaced by ordinary soldiers?

the animated series the bad consignment, revealed that the Empire’s decision to replace the clones with ordinary soldiers was because the latter were easier to control than the clones. Despite being genetically identical, Republic clone troopers had free will and individuality. Many were conflicted about their part in Order 66 and the subsequent purge of non-compliant planets and systems throughout the galaxy, not understanding why they should attack inhabitants of other planets whom they once protected from the Separatist army.

Clones were harder to control

Company 99, made up of clones with very different characteristics from their brothers, refused to follow Palpatine’s orders, lighting a spark with their disobedience, which led to multiple clone revolts. After all, the clones were soldiers of the Republic and believed in its ideals: justice, freedom and democracy. Despite their genetic mind programming, they were not as willing to be enforcers of a totalitarian regime as the one Palpatine wanted to impose. However, the soldiers recruited were many of them devoted to Palpatine and genuinely believed in the empire’s message, even giving up their names for TK numbers.

Another possible reason for the swapping of clones for recruits is the additional level of control it gave the Empire over different systems. By drawing soldiers from all corners of the galaxy, presenting Imperial enlistment as the only way out of a life of poverty in the Outer Rim, as Luke Skywalker himself saw it, the Empire reduced the risk of rebellion. A planet with children serving in the Imperial Navy would be much less likely to withstand Palpatine’s regime than one with nothing to lose. Therefore, replacing clone troopers with ordinary humans helped Palpatine tighten his control over the galaxy.

How was the end of the clone army?

In The bad consignment we were able to see how the cloning facility on Kamino was shut down shortly after the end of the war. They only left one more generation of soldiers to grow and train. To later destroy the cloning factories. Taking Nala Se, Kamino’s chief medical scientist responsible for designing the Clones to serve the empire for other purposes. The rest of the great Army of the Republic, due to its accelerated aging, began to be gradually replaced in the ranks during the first years of Imperial rule. Circa 5 BBY (5 years before Yavin), timeline in which it takes place Star Wars: RebelsAlmost all Stormtroopers on active duty were ordinary recruits.

Obi-Wan Kenobi offered a glimpse of what life was like for clones after the Empire took over. Clones didn’t appear in the original trilogy, but that’s mainly because Star Wars: Return of the Jedi was released in 1983, and the clone troopers didn’t show up until Star Wars: Attack of the Clones it hit theaters in 2002. The Clone Wars were mentioned in A New Hope by Obi-Wan, but not really explored.
