There are few things more capable of putting a horde of fanboys on a war footing than the announcement of the signing of an actor to play a hero or a villain in a comic book adaptation for the big screen. It may be that, when reading this, your mind has automatically gone to the DC Universe and, more specifically, to the figure of a Joker who raised blisters when the name of Heath Ledger came to the fore during the pre-production of ‘The Dark Knight’.

However, today we will focus on a more recent version – and, probably, much more hated – of the clown prince of crime. This is none other than the one that David Ayer and Jared Leto shaped for the disappointing ‘Suicide Squad’ of 2016; an incarnation of the mythical Gothamite villain whose appearance sparked the ire of the fandom with just one promotional image.

The case of Leto’s Joker has continued to bring a tail to the point that, seven years after the film’s premiere, its own director has expressed his regret for a specific detail of the antagonist’s appearance: commented —and horrendous— tattoo that he wears on his forehead and in which the word “Damaged” can be read.

After a Twitter user asked Ayer about the meaning of the tattoo of marasthe filmmaker did not hesitate to explain the raison d’être of the ornament:

“It’s the Joker trolling Batman after he punched his teeth out. It’s the one aesthetic decision I wish I hadn’t made. I got a lot of flak for it, obviously.”

However, despite his repentance, the director confessed in 2018 that the tattoo likesbut that “originality and fidelity to the canon often clash”.

“I like it. In my mind I was dedicated to Batman after I knocked out his teeth for killing Jason Todd. Some people found it alienating. Originality and faithfulness to canon often clash. Batman and the Joker are my two favorite characters since always”.

The last film appearance of Jared Leto’s Joker to date – you never know with the multiverse fashion – was in the fantastic ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ in which, curiously, appeared without the word on the forehead. Without a doubt, a curious decision and a farewell for a version of the character that, in my point of view, had great potential.

In fact, Ayer also thinks so, since after another tweeter told him that “Leto’s Joker was the biggest disappointment since Crystal Pepsi”, he did not hesitate to point out once again to the studio snips as guilty of the creative debacle that was ‘Suicide Squad’.

“That’s what happens when you blow up a performance and a character arc. I’m sorry that’s all you were allowed to see.”
