If Quentin Tarantino was talked about twenty years ago as the “enfant terrible” of Hollywood, it was not by chance. Since his debut with ‘Reservoir Dogs’, the man from Tennessee has stood out for not cutting a hair when it comes to his use of language, controversial content and explicit violence that, according to what he says, made the Cannes Film Festival take extraordinary measures for the first time in its history.

During the last edition of the French festival, in which he presented a screening of ‘Rolling Thunder’, Tarantino was able to talk with Deadline and ensure that Cannes took a warning out of its sleeve to alert viewers to the graphic nature of ‘Reservoir Dogs’ ‘ and ‘Pulp Fiction’.

“They came up with something for our screening that they had never done before, they put an orange sticker on the entrance that said: This movie may be too violent for you to watch. They had never done that before, and they ended up putting the same sticker on ‘Pulp Fiction.’ when it was shown here in 1994. And then at some point, with Lars von Trier, they stopped playing it.”

It remains to be seen if ‘The Movie Critic’ would be worthy of this extinct orange sticker when it is released —and, potentially, it goes through the Thierry Frémaux festival— but from what the filmmaker has said, his tenth and last film promises to be of everything but white.

“Everything else was too vulgar to read, but there was a porno magazine that had a very interesting film page. He wrote about popular movies and was the second-rate critic. I think he was a very good critic. He was cynical as a matter of fact. His reviews were a cross between early Howard Stern and what Travis Bickle might be if he were a film critic – think of Travis’s diary entries.

But the porn magazine critic was very, very funny. He was very rude, you know. He used foul language and racial slurs. But the shit about him was so much fun. He wrote as if he was 55, but he was only in his early to mid-30s. He died in his late 30s. It wasn’t clear for a while, but now I’ve done some more research and I think it was complications due to alcoholism.”
