There is no doubt that one of the biggest claims of the huge ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ are its aerial combat scenes. Watching Joseph Kosinski’s feature film on an IMAX screen is an unforgettable experience that remains engraved in the retinas thanks to the planning work, the spectacular direction of photography by Claudio Miranda and some stunts worthy of the best actioner that we can imagine

Don’t say action, say ‘Top Gun’

However, its top manager is not too amused that the feature film is labeled as an “action movie.” During an interview with Vulture, Kosinski made it clear that he never thought of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ in those termsand defended that the dramatic component was always above the rest.

“I still maintain that the original intent of the film was to tell a close, emotional story about a man going through a rite of passage late in his life. I’ve always said that the first film was a drama wrapped up in an action film. And that’s why, when I heard that we had won best action movie and best stunts, I thought, ‘Am I ever going to describe it that way? Did I ever think of it as an action movie when I was making it?’ I did. The drama was always ahead. The execution of the flying scenes supported it.”

In addition, the filmmaker stressed that the madness of Tom Cruise, the explosions and the high-flying adrenaline shots of the film are only added to reinforce its narrative core; something that, on the other hand, should be applied to any self-respecting feature film.

“In every action sequence we always tell a story, evolving the narrative, learning something about the character’s state of mind. We tried to do that not just in every scene, but in every shot of every scene. So, yeah, the action is what It made people see it for the first time, but it was the excitement that made them come back to see it two, three, or four times. Some guy came up the other night and said he’d seen it 32 times! that keeps people coming back. And I think that’s the key to great successes.”

To finish, he did not hesitate to illustrate his reasoning using a example like ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’, its great competitor at the 2022 box office.

“I don’t know if you’ve seen ‘Avatar 2,’ but I felt like the show was just a part of it, but there was an emotional line that hooked me. So emotion is key, but you need to do something that audiences know they have to watch on the big screen to get the full experience.

For my part, I can only agree with Mr Kosinski. Without a main character with a strong conflict and with whom you can identify, any audiovisual pirouette loses not only its raison d’être, but also a good part of its capacity to impact the viewer. I wish all directors were aware of this.
