After a relatively calm episode with ‘Andor’ as the main reference, he played this week in ‘The Mandalorian’ something more adventurous and classic… and short. So with half an hour of footage, the series returns to Disney+ opening a new act with Mandalorian status fully restored for both Din (Pedro Pascal) as for Bo Katan (Katee Sackoff).

By the way, from here spoilers for ‘The Orphan’, episode 3×04 of ‘The Mandalorian’.

We return to the Mandalorian refuge which we reached last week and it’s time for Grogu to start hitting the road. Of course, apparently as he is not yet old enough to speak and recite the creed, he is not old enough to wear the helmet required for the clan either. That does not prevent him from starting his training and as soon as the episode begins he faces a dueling boy.

The surprising (not for us) Grogu’s victory is marred when a sort of winged dragon/monster appears from the sky and takes his contender (Ragnar as we later discovered). Thus begins an adventure in which part of the clan comes out to rescue the child before it is too late.

As happened in the previous episode, in ‘The Orphan’ the action is moderately interrupted to take us to a flashback which takes us back to the days of the infamous purge of the Jedi Order. Thus, as the armorer strikes the béskar to provide Grogu with his first piece of armor, he remembers how he managed to escape the clones.

In a long and fast-paced sequence somewhat marred by subpar effects, we see how the Jedi masters try, unsuccessfully, to rescue all the kids under their wing. Be Kelleran Bek (Ahmed Best, who was behind Jar Jar Binks in the prequels) the savior of our baby Yoda. The result, yes, is fateful… being one of the few who manage to escape.

Of course, Jon Favreau does not want to reveal more than necessary and cuts the story here, leaving questions like where is Beq headed to Naboo perhaps? Or those gaps that remain to be filled in the thirty years? that have passed since Order 66 until Din meets Grogu for the first time at the beginning of ‘The Mandalorian’.

Flashing back to the present, the Armorer puts a visibly traumatized Grogu in his first breastplate. At some distance, the Mandalorians Lead To The Dragon’s Nest, where the kidnapping monster regurgitates the boy to feed it to its young. Needless to say, the rescue ends up being a success… but it goes with a twist since upon their return we discover that with them they bring the small and now orphaned cubs, complying with the creed.

This act of ‘The Mandalorian’ seems to have a clear purpose of showing, at least as seen in ‘The Orphan’, the arrival in the path of the Mandalore by both Grogu and Bo-Katan. Again, the title of the episode is read in two ways, being able to apply to several of the characters that star in it.

It is also curious the decision of Bo-Katan to tell, finally, that he saw a Mythosaur in the depths of the mines of Mandalore. Something that the Armorer does not seem to give too much importance to, considering it little more than a vision of whoever takes the path of the mandalore but that, everything indicates, is very important for the character’s arc.
