“Bone Woman: The Bone Woman” is a horror film that has won more than 30 awards at film festivals in Mexico and the worldsuch as the Tribeca International Film Festival 2022, the Sitges Festival and the Morelia International Film Festival, among others.

The film is the film debut of Michelle Garza Cerverawho lives in Mexico City and stars the Mexican actress Natalia Solianwhich gives life to Valeria, a woman who becomes pregnant for the first time by her husband and begins to have supernatural entities, visions and dreams.

The film has been critically acclaimed for its body horror and its terrifying version, but at the same time for the current perception of motherhood, since it approaches it from a woman who falls and dies to a spirit that haunts her at night and break bones in bed.

Those horrors that Valeria sees turn her against all her relatives, with the exception of her single and childless aunt, who is the only person who can help her, through her healer friends who make use of ancestral Mexican medicine.

“That was what was important in “Huesera”, not particularly the pregnancy, it was more about the identity sacrifices that come with motherhood and that involves both the bodily aspects of it [del embarazo] like the psychological aspects that most of the film focuses on her losses and her feelings that accompany the changes in her body”, Michelle Garza told “HipLatina”.

“[Valeria] she didn’t feel safe enough to tell anyone what was really going on because she couldn’t tell if it was real or not, if it was in her head or if she was really seeing it. For me, it is very symbolic that this experience is going to open her up wide,” she added.

Besides, the director of “Bone Woman: The Bone Woman” commented that the main character of the tape has visions every time “someone doubts her, intimidates her, belittles her”but it’s not just her imagination, “it’s a visual manifestation of her fear of having to face herself and be with her truth.”

Michelle Garza was inspired by her grandmother to create “Huesera: The Bone Woman”

Michelle Garza Cervera, assured that her first film is inspired by her grandmother and was an opportunity to show the social pressures of adjusting to gender roles, and how motherhood radically changes the lives of women

“This film was inspired by my grandmother whose story was denied me. They even denied me her photo and her name. I couldn’t have access to her because she didn’t follow the domestic life expected of society…”, she said.

“When I had access to her story and her photo and who she was, it changed my life, so it was important for me to give birth to a character like this because they exist, and their stories deserve our eyes and ears because they are a part of our families, our homes. It is important to give life and stop silencing them,” she added.
