We have reached a point where there is no month without the film that is a love letter to the cinema, or at least that’s how it appears. Cinephilia on the lapel of the jacket that will be more or less developed later, but that you don’t want it to escape too much to the one who is watching to, hopefully, infect him with enthusiasm. They never hurt, yes, some who seek to do it from an unexpected Trojan horse.

It’s a bit like what Ben Affleck does in his most successful film. Not necessarily the best, which speaks of his talent as a filmmaker (undeniably superior to that of an actor, although sometimes it can be well used), but without a doubt a fabulous film that is capable of working on different fronts. There is a lot to appreciate and enjoy in a movie like ‘Argo’.

A movie rescue

The film tells us about the real events in Iran in 1979, when the US embassy in Tehran is stormed and occupied by the followers of Ayatollah Khomeini. Six American diplomats manage to take refuge in the Canadian embassy, but unable to escape the country and are at grave risk of death. The CIA will turn to one of its hostage rescue experts, Tony Mendez, to put together a plan to clandestinely save diplomats.

The best plan he can come up with is, of course, to simulate the shooting of a Hollywood sci-fi movie, having the rescued pass off as part of the filming crew and thus organizing the way back. You will have to pull strings with real producers and technicians in Hollywood to give the feeling that the film project is real, making an exciting look at how a genre film works at the production level within the system.

This part of the film injects the same a very grateful component of fun among the extreme seriousness of the matter, which also comes when he enters foreign territory. Affleck is able to handle well the tone that goes from the carefree movie to the rescue thriller, where he already exhibits that Michael Mann pulse that he handled so well in the brilliant ‘The Town (City of thieves)’.

‘Argo’: indefatigable and fun thriller

That makes it a very particular film to win the best picture award at the Oscars of its year, especially when the favorite candidates had certain elements in common with it, whether it was ‘Blackest Night’ (the explosive thriller with international conflicts ) or ‘Django Unchained’ (a light-hearted film loaded with cinephilia). However, even without being an indisputable film, it is one of the strongest winners the Academy Awards have had.

His arrival on HBO Max is a perfect opportunity to confirm this, or to admire Affleck’s ability to do an indefatigable, adult and highly entertaining film. His directing pulse never trembles, the actors are perfectly chosen (even himself) and he creates a magnificent tension that is never too confusing. An aspect that makes him less Mann, but there is no doubt that he is a worthy heir.
