We have witnessed the strange alliances of Superman and Lex Luthor, or Batman and Joker, but these are not the only times in which both sides of the coin

The history of the DC Universe has given us some obvious examples with anti-heroes like Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn, we can delve into wilder, weirder, and forgotten tales that good and evil have had to come together.

Discover the strangest of heroes and villains in the DC Universe.

Hercules and Lex Luthor (ACTION COMICS #267)

DC Comics

Lex Luthor has long been one of Superman’s most cunning villains, but did you know that he once used his mind – and some ancient magic – to trick the heroic Hercules into helping him escape from prison?

After introducing readers to the brawny demigod as he helps Superman save Lois Lane, we’re quickly surprised when he’s called to Lex Luthor’s jail cell.

Making a little sad story out of Hercules, Luthor enlists him to free him and steal a treasure that Lex claims belongs to him. The naive supergod agrees to Luthor’s ploy for a while, but it all ends once he realizes he’s been tricked. This is a great example of the kind of weird and ambitious stories that came out of DC in the ’60s.

Batwoman and Cat-Man (DETECTIVE COMICS #318)

DC Comics

In this hilarious Silver Age tale from Henry Boltinoff, Jack Schiff, Ruben Moreira, Joe Certa, Sheldon Moldoff, Mike Esposito and Jim Mooney, Batman drives Batwoman (not the one we’ve met since 2006) to despair and nearly to betrayal after a lovesick Cat-Man saves his life.

Batman puts all the blame on Batwoman, who has had enough of his antics (the couple are dating) and she sneaks off to join Cat-Man. Her costume is infinitely cooler and (unlike Batman) Cat-Man promises the newly named Cat-Woman a life together as the king and queen of crime.

His team is powerful and seems much more beneficial to Bat/Cat-Woman and her role as a potential partner/lover than with the old Bats. But of course, it’s all just a ploy for Batwoman to show Batman that she’s actually a very useful crime fighter.

After helping Batman defeat his enemy, the story takes an extremely dark turn. Cat-Man’s boat explodes as the romantic couple look on and smile at the fact that he could never have survived. Even more grim is that Batwoman keeps her Cat-Woman costume as a “trophy.”

Wonder Woman and the Prince Monster (WONDER WOMAN #155)

Does a marriage count as a union? And can the Monster Prince’s Jekyll and Hyde journey really be described as villainous? For the sake of including this totally wild track by Bob Kanigher, Ross Andru and Mike Esposito on our list, the answer is a big yes!

After her three classic suitors – Steve Trevor, Manno the Merman and Bird-Man – annoy her to a dangerous point, Wonder Woman meets a mysterious hunk. Little does she know that she is actually a monster.

After stumbling upon her villainous would-be boyfriend hiding in his castle, Wonder Woman decides to try and help the monster, but he viciously attacks her and the Amazons, refusing her help. Despite this, Diana decides that she must marry him to give the Monster Prince a chance at happiness.

Unfortunately, Manno stops the wedding and the Prince flees, hoping to save Diana from his monstrous ways. In a shocking twist, after saving Wonder Woman’s life during her pursuit, the Monster Prince transforms into a handsome hunk.

Diana is understandably intrigued, but her boyfriend has realized that marriage is more trouble than it’s worth and rejects Diana, heading home to build a giant ‘no trespassing’ sign.

Wonder Woman and Cheetah (WONDER WOMAN #792)

DC Comics

From a team with one of their darkest villains to their best known! This issue of Wonder Woman by Becky Cloonan, Michael W. Conrad, Marguerite Sauvage, and Pat Brosseau takes the idea of a superhero/villain team up to the next level.

Far from being a gimmick or attention-grabbing, this story showcases Wonder Woman’s best and perhaps her greatest strength: compassion.

The gorgeously illustrated comic begins as Diana breaks into the Cale Industries labs to free her former friend and long-term enemy, Dr. Barbara Ann Minerva, aka Cheetah.

After a successful escape, which includes burning the offending lab to the ground, Diana binds the Cheetah with the Lasso of Truth in hopes that it will lead the villain back to humanity.

It’s a vibrantly clever plan and it works, leading to Cheetah joining Checkmate and fighting alongside her sister as a hero and ally instead of the antagonist she once was.

Batman and Joker (BATMAN: LAST KNIGHT ON EARTH)

"5
DC Comics

This three-issue miniseries from beloved Batman creative team Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo (with Jonathan Glapion inks, FCO Plascencia colors and Tom Napolitano letters) brought Batman to the brink of the apocalypse with a wildly unexpected partner.

After being shot by a dead body, waking up in Arkham Asylum, and realizing that the entire world as he knows it has ended, Bruce Wayne is given another rude awakening. His only friend is the severed head of the Joker, which he carries on a cracked red lantern.

Throughout the bizarre story, narrated by the Joker, Bruce has to deal with a post-apocalyptic landscape and the stupid talk of his old nemesis. And just when you think things couldn’t get weirder, the Joker takes on the role of Robin with a super high-tech mech suit holding his severed head.
