For some time now, getting a movie ticket has been more like an escape room than a simple and friendly experience: keep in mind the discounts, the special rooms, the exclusive promotions, compare, watch the day of the spectator… The rooms have done their best to offer different experiences (for example, the luxurious rooms where they serve you food to the seat, or those that expand the screen beyond its limits), but the public has not always responded with a smile.

The poor with the poor should be

AMC, the largest movie theater chain in the United States, going to try a new way to charge the viewer (In 2022 he already tried it by asking for two more dollars to go the week of the premiere of ‘The Batman’), and what in the head of its managers might seem like a good initiative has turned into something gruesome. Basically, in its rooms it will offer three different types of tickets: on the one hand, the normal one, which will have the usual price (called “standard line of sight”). On the other, the best, more focused ones, which will have a price increase (“preferred line of sight”). And finally, those in the first rows, which will have a cheaper price so that everyone can, ahem, enjoy the cinema (“cheap line of sight”).

In Spain, charging more for the best seats is not new to us., but paying less for the worst is something unheard of. Especially since the message you leave is that if you don’t have enough money, you can’t watch the movies in conditions either. You can break your neck in the front row, and thank you. Elijah Wood has left his (accurate) opinion on Twitter:

The movie theater is and always has been a democratic and sacred space for all. This new AMC initiative would penalize people with less money and reward those with more.

John Rocha, film critic, has been much more vehement: “This is classist bullshit. Poor people, you will sit in the poor sectionand the rich please move the velvet ropes around your seat.” Resurrecting decades-old models—watching movies from the chicken coop for less—sounds outdated and desperate. If this is the best AMC has come up with to win back its audience, maybe it’s time to give it a fresh spin.
