Although it is now revered as one of the best comedies of the 21st century (and in history), the American version of ‘The Office’ did not have an easy time surviving on the competitive television schedule. In fact, during the first two seasons they were about to be eaten by the cancel bear.

In fact, the second season has already been approved a little without much spirit with a commission of only six episodes… which, little by little and seeing how the audiences were going up, became a complete season of 22. And one of the episodes that changed the entire situation of uncertainty for the series was, precisely, ‘The Christmas party‘, the Christmas episode of season 2.

This is how they tell it Angela Kinsey (Angela) and Brian Baumgartner (Kevin)commenting how “we were almost canceled two, three, four, ten, twelve times at the beginning” and that the success of said episode was decisive in keeping it on the air:

“We had gone downhill fast and then we came back and [ese episodio] it really served as a defining event for us. And from there we really took off.”

The Disastrous Invisible Friend

As you will remember, ‘The Christmas party’ revolves around an “invisible friend” in the Dunder Mifflin offices. You can already imagine that something goes wrong… and, as usual, due to the work of Michael Scott (Steve Carell). An episode full of moments which obtained great recognition from the public, critics and also awards.

But the audience on television (which was caused in part by the premiere of ‘Virgin at 40’) was not the only factor. By then, iTunes started supporting video and the television networks began to sell their series through the Apple tool just in that season. ‘The Office’ began to stand out:

“After that episode aired, we were the number one show on iTunes and suddenly we were all like ‘Wait, we’ve found our audience.’ From then on things changed and we got going.»

This, in addition fascinated the cast of the comedy, which began to feel more choral and they began to love doing these festive episodes. In Kinsey’s words:

«They became something like legendary episodes. We were like “Oh my gosh, there’s another one. It’s Christmas time.” We loved dressing up. The set always looked great. We knew there would be some ridiculous drama. We all loved these episodes.”
