You have to see how charming the small cities of Castilla y León like Segovia, Ávila or, why not, Palencia. The latter is a small provincial capital of less than 80,000 inhabitants where we can find true jewels of architecture and precious corners to escape to on any given weekend.

Thus, today we have compiled its seven most emblematic corners with which we can really imbibe the spirit of Palencia.

The Christ of the Otero

Without a doubt, it is one of the symbols of the city. On a hill or, rather, a Knoll, stands an imposing sculpture by the famous local sculptor Victorio Macho that is more than 20 meters high which makes it the largest Christ in Spain. Many compare it with the Brazilian Christ the Redeemer, although the one on the other side of the pond is somewhat larger, although this does not mean that this 2022 has been twinned.

The Cathedral of San Antolin

The second on the list and another of its key points is the Cathedral which is called The Unknown Beauty, a name that fits the hair because no one imagines that such a small city has a jewel in a predominantly Gothic style with elements from earlier times such as Visigothic and Romanesque, and Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical decorative elements. Without a doubt, a place where it is worth going and letting yourself be surprised.

The Provincial Council

A place that also leaves locals and strangers speechless is the building that today is the headquarters of the Provincial Council of Palencia. It is a neoclassical and neo-Renaissance building with Baroque influences, typical of the first half of the 20th century. It was inaugurated on October 19, 1916, being a project by the architect from Palencia Jerome Arroyo.

As data that are part of the history of the city, this palace suffered a fire in 1966 in which Gaspar Arroyo died who was, coincidentally, the son of the architect who designed it.

San Miguel’s Church

It is said, it is commented (but it has never been possible to confirm) that In the Church of San Miguel de Palencia El Cid Campeador married Doña Jimena, which gives it a touch of incredible romanticism. A beautiful place with views of the Carrión River that is worth visiting to enjoy.

The main street

The backbone of the city of Palencia is The main street where a succession of arcades reveal wonderful buildings and some of the symbols of modernism, of which it has a large concentration, one of the largest in Spain.

We cannot stop looking at the Casino, the Villandrando building and many others with a private title.

The supply square

Next to the Diputación we find the Market Square, the market, the nerve center of the most typical products of the city such as the suckling lamb churro. A very innovative brick, iron and glass structure for the time in which it was designed, the s. XIX, using a construction technique inherited from the Central Market in Paris or the Palacio de Cristal in the Parque del Retiro in Madrid.
