Perhaps one of the most recurring phrases in current conversations about movies, series, and their content is “this could not be done today”. As a general rule, this expression is used with a certain nostalgia and as a thrown weapon towards what many consider the irritating “political correctness” of a presumed “glass generation”. Now, Lizzy Caplan has turned the phrase around by referring to ‘Fatal Attraction’.

attraction and progress

The actress, who is working in a reimagining of the steamy ’80s psychosexual thriller in the form of a series for Paramount+ under the orders of Nicole Clemens, has spoken in Grazia magazine about the original film and the problems that revolved around its third act.

“The original movie is still great. It’s still scary, and it makes you ask important questions. There were two different endings, and Glenn Close preferred one of them, but [los productores] They preferred to choose another.”

Caplan refers to the ending in which the Alex, Glenn Close’s character, ends up committing suicide. A diametrically opposed closure to the one that ended up reaching the big screen, in which he dies at the hands of Dan and his wife.

“Glenn Close fought to protect the fact that Alex, his character, was fragile and dealing with mental illness. None of that was reflected in the film. Audiences saw it from an ’80s perspective; this amazing guy commits one mistake and now this horrible woman is trying to ruin his life.”

For the interpreter, times have changed enough enough for that vision to be, at least, difficult to materialize today. It remains to be seen what route they have taken in the episodic remake.

“It shows how far we’ve come. I don’t think we’ve reached the finish line as far as what happened with #MeToo and what it set in motion, but the idea of not being able to do the ’80s version now shows certain degree of progress.
