The sensationalist true crime phenomenon has put the figures of serial killers as pop cult figures. almost lost art in order to approach moral perversity and human decadence with a bit of complaint. Given the proliferation of works like ‘Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story’, one almost wants to take refuge in the roots of crime films.

Fortunately, a foundational piece, which is also one of the best works out of german cinema, you can enjoy streaming without having to pay. In addition to subscription platforms such as Movistar+ or FilmBox+, a masterly key work for the evolution of cinema such as ‘M, the Düsseldorf Vampire’ can be seen for free on Plex.

horror is loose

Any way is valid to approach this incredible film by Fritz Lang, supreme influence for terror with serial killers, for the evolution towards talkies and for the response to Nazi propaganda that was to dominate German filmography. A look with understanding, not sympathy, for a terrifying child murderer who causes a great uproar in German society.

After a dozen expressionist and silent films, Lang launched his first venture into “talkies”, the first talking pictures. But, unlike them, he did not renounce silences, express through moving image, to visual power. You begin to talk, but dialogues are not abused. Those that exist are significant to leave their mark, such as Peter Lorre’s powerful speech at a key moment in the film.

Lang also decided to portray the rise of hatred before the final seizure of power by the National Socialist German Workers’ Party. ‘M, the Vampire of Düsseldorf’ was two years ahead of the establishment of the Third Reich, but was able to reflect the sentiment that would lead to his rise. The mobs of the population, mobilized by hatred, play an important role in what the work wants to tell along with the personification of extreme evil Lorre’s character.

‘M, the vampire from Düsseldorf’: pointing to the future

The murderer recognizes his psychopathy, his moments of not differentiating good from evil and allowing himself to be consumed by the latter. The mobs, a priori more aware of the difference, cannot help but be carried away by impulse. Lang’s camera finds a way to denounce without falling into cheap sensationalism, looking for a complexity and cynicism in his gaze that will later be another foundation stone. Specifically, for the development of film noir.

There is not a single moment of ‘M, the Vampire of Düsseldorf’ really wasted. Even talking about someone who has created masterpieces like ‘Dr. Mabuse‘ either ‘metropolis‘, Lang manages to create an even more essential work, knowing how to evolve with the changes in the audiovisual medium and with the new forms of cinema. But, even more incredible, he creates a work that is still current more than 90 years later and that he continues to give lessons on how to approach the psychopathy of the murderer.
