On the three occasions that Argentina and Mexico met in the World Cups, the victory was albiceleste:

1930: thrashed at the Centennial

In the first edition of the World Cup, that of Uruguay, Argentina and Mexico crossed their paths on July 19, 1930 at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo.

Mexico was already eliminated in their group and Argentina had fun with a broken toy, with a 6-3, in a match in which Guillermo Stábile stood out for the South American team, with a hat-trick.

The duel hardly had a story, with a 3-0 score for the Argentines after 17 minutes. From then on, the outlook was clear for an Argentina that led the group and then reached the final of the competition, being beaten there 4-2 by Uruguay, the first team to win the new tournament.

2006: Scaloni and Messi in the field

The only game that Lionel Scaloni, the current Argentina coach, played as a player in a World Cup was precisely against Mexico, in the round of 16 of Germany 2006, in Leipzig.

Messi turned 19 that day and also played the game, in his case as a substitute and entering the game in the 84th minute, instead of Javier Saviola. He was canceled somewhat.

Mexico began winning the game, with a goal from Rafa Márquez in the 6th minute, but soon after Argentina equalized through Hernán Crespo (10). The equality was maintained until in the first part of the extra time he signed the final 2-1 goal for the Argentines Maxi Rodríguez (98).

On the benches there was a duel of Argentine strategists, since José Pekerman led his country and Ricardo La Volpe the Mexicans. In Qatar 2022 there will be a similar circumstance, between Scaloni and the coach of the Mexicans, Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino.

Argentina advanced to the quarterfinals, where they were cut off in a penalty shootout by hosts Germany.
