When is international men’s day?

November 19 is marked as International Men’s Day. This has been commemorated since 1999 and its purpose is to promote positive male role models, to avoid the perpetration of aggressive behaviors for the general population.

This commemoration contributes to a redefinition of the contributions of men to society, in which they join in activities of their community, family and a healthy marriage and support with the environment.

Due to different issues of social paradigms that have limited people of the male gender to explore their emotions, so this date seeks to provoke reflections in men, so that they can have better mental, emotional and spiritual health with which they can develop in a positive way. fully in your community.

Why is it celebrated?

According to information published by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), men in the Americas live, on average, between five and seven years less than women. Among the main causes of mortality are non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, road accidents, suicides, depression, injuries, violence and cardiovascular diseases. These causes of morbidity and mortality in men in Latin America and the Caribbean have been related to gender, a predominantly macho culture, human rights, and other determinants of health.

This commemoration has a special emphasis on family and community health, as well as cross-cutting issues of gender, human rights, ethnic origin, social protection in health, primary care and health promotion.

During the celebration of this international day, various global campaigns are carried out: the analysis of new non-macho, patriarchal or violent masculinities, since these also affect men.

This day is not intended to compete or discuss with the feminist struggle and its conquest of rights, it seeks to give a positive cause to the positive expressions of the male gender and the areas in which they can improve their conditions in society.
