Spain may not be a country specifically known for its animation, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t great talents out there that deserve recognition. Alberto Vázquez and Uniko are proof of this, with the recently released ‘Unicorn Wars’ and ‘Psychonauts: The Forgotten Children’its fascinating and bleak first animated feature film that is available for free on RTVE Play.

Time passes, time will never come back

In a strange island ravaged by an ecological catastrophethey live Birdboy and Dinky, two children who become friends in the midst of this hostile environment. One morning, Dinki decides to leave her home and go with her friends in search of a better future, but the road will not be easy and Birdboy does not seem to be willing to accompany him…

This is how ‘Psychonauts’ begins, a psychedelic trip hand in hand with some little animals that, in another story, would be the friendly protagonists of a fast-paced adventure and here we helplessly witness the difficult obstacles that they will find on their way.

Disturbing is a good word to define the story of this animated film. Filled with grotesque as well as hypnotic images that reflect a desolate world that functions as a deformed mirror of ours.

The scenario that the film presents us symbolically refers to the terrible future we are leaving for the next generations. The protagonists live in a world that they have not built, consumed by environmental and moral pollution.

Adults are shown as threatening figuresauthentic unscrupulous monsters moved by selfishness, who make his life hell and who will leave him no other way out than to face the unknown in order to escape from there.

Alberto Vázquez and Pedro Rivero act as directors and screenwriters of this adaptation of the homonymous comic by Vázquez, which at the time had a first approach in the short film ‘Birdboy’. Like ‘Unicorn Wars’, the story does not make any concessions and He doesn’t stop with his nihilistic tone and at times suffocating.

The film shines especially in the graphic section, with an animation worthy of the most hypnotic moments of the cinema of Satoshi Kon or Ari Folman. Not only does it perfectly frame that nightmarish universe, but it manages to draw us into the dark atmosphere of the story.

‘Psychonauts: The Forgotten Children’ is a authentic gem of Spanish animationfull of fascinating and disturbing images, fantastic animation and a devastating story that alerts us to the future that we are leaving to the new generations.
