In Netflix there are a generous number of movies and series that were produced or starred by women and to commemorate their international day, we present four ideal series and movies to watch this March 8th.
fragments of a woman
This film narrates the drama of Martha (played by Vaness Kirby), who is a woman in her 30s and who, together with her partner, Sean (Shia LaBeouf), are waiting for the birth of their daughter, so they make the decision to have the baby at home with a birth assisted by a midwife.
The story ends when the baby dies in her mother’s armsa tragic event that will mark the lives of the protagonists, who are also judged by society.
“Orange is the New Black”
This series is one of the most popular on Netflix, it was created by Jenji Leslie Kohan and it is a comedy drama based on the autobiographical book called “Orange Is the New Black: Chronicle of my year in a women’s federal prison”, by Piper Kerman.
Released in 2013, each chapter tells the life of Piper Chapmann (Taylor Shilling) who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for crimes related to drug trafficking.
At Litchfield Women’s Penitentiary, Chapman meets his ex-girlfriend Alex (Laura Prepon) whom he blames for everything bad that is happening in his life.
“What Happened, Miss Simone?”
In this documentary, directed by Liz Garbus, interviews, statements and performances of the life and work of the African-American artist, Nina Simone, who is not only remembered for her music, but also for her fight for civil rights, take place.
Also known as the “priestess of soul”this production goes back to its roots, showing that the protagonist was never able to fulfill her true dream, to be a classical pianist.
In the almost two hours of this documentary, aspects that little are known about this artist are narrated, who defended the armed movement of the racial struggle.
parallel mothers
in this film of Pedro AlmodovarThere are two mothers: a mature photographer, Janis Martinez (Penelope Cruz) and a young woman, Ana Manso (Milena Smit), who are in the same maternity hospital and will have their children on the same day.
This film also presents another plot: the search for the remains of a group of men who were made to disappear by the Falangists at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, including Janis’s great-grandfather.
Almodóvar combined the maternity and historical memory to confirm his talent and uniqueness as an author.
