The measures in Shanghai, China, in the face of a new wave of covid-19 are increasingly severe and are already causing numerous problems among the city’s population. The economy is at a standstill, there are food shortages, job losses and home evictions. In addition, construction works have been cancelled, the opening of new businesses and street sales have been prohibited. You are not even allowed to leave the house during the quarantine to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
The situation is so alarming and the confinement so strict that an immigrant woman lived inside a phone booth for a month. Unfortunately, and despite having nowhere to go, the health authorities evicted her and threw the few belongings she had into the street. The images of the eviction have gone viral on social networks not only because of their lack of humanity, but also because of how alarming this confinement has become.
According to newspaper information China Youth Daily, the woman was a worker in her 50s who had lived in the area since February, but shortly after the strict confinement began, she was evicted from her rental apartment, since she had no money to continue with the payments. Without a livelihood or a roof to live under, the woman carved out a space for herself in a phone booth, where she kept her belongings and found shelter from the cold nights.
Unfortunately, she is not the only one in this situation, since it is reported that other people are going through similar situations and have found it necessary to sleep on cardboard, under bridges or in tents installed on the sidewalk.
Unfortunately for this woman, the sanitary measures of this latest confinement have become much more severe and the authorities have not been tempted to evict her from her only provisional home. After throwing her out along with her belongings, they sealed the cabin with duct tape.
Although the woman fought to keep the small space to protect herself, the authorities ignored her and she could only manage to hold her dog against her chest, cry helplessly and leave the place. It is worth mentioning that the authorities offered her accommodation in public shelters, but the woman did not accept her offer.
This is just one of the hundreds or perhaps thousands of cases that currently exist in Shanghai and that are already beginning to cause terror, panic and despair among its inhabitants.
