Brian Gay, producer of Werewolf by Night, explained how it was decided to present the lycanthrope of the Marvel Universe in a special and not in a series or a movie.
The terror of Werewolf by Night has reached the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in its version of Jake Russel, played by Gael García Bernal, in a Halloween special, the first to be carried out by Marvel Studios, after producing more than 29 films, 8 series and an animated series.

Werewolf by Night became La Casa de las Ideas’s first television special, similar to the Charlie Brown and Snoopy shows for special dates, which air on ABC in the United States.
In an interview for comicbook, Brian Gay, producer of the special, spoke about how the ideas arose to present Jack Russel within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“It’s funny how sometimes things just come together. And it was just one of those. We had always wondered: where could we present Werewolf by Night?… We love the character. And where would he be alright? Of course, movies, TV shows, series, series of different lengths, but Disney+ allows us to be very flexible with what we do.”
Horror influences Christmas and Charlie Brown?
Despite being a TV special, Werewolf by night falls into the feature film category according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the producer noted that classic horror films and Charlie Brown specials were the key to putting together the special
“One of the things that had always come up is that we love a good network special, something like Charlie Brown’s Christmas or Frosty the Snowman, things like that that were special and show once, or maybe show every year… And we said , ‘Well, could we do one of those?’ And it turns out the answer was yes. And that’s where Werewolf by Night came from.”
In a strange and macabre throwback to the leader’s life, the attendees find themselves embroiled in a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic, a hunt that will ultimately bring them face to face with a dangerous monster.
Inspired by horror films from the 1930s and 1940s, the hair-raising special aims to evoke a sense of horror and the macabre, with plenty of suspense and scares along the way as we explore a new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Directed by Michael Giacchino, Werewolf by Night stars Gael Garcia Bernal, Laura Donnelly and Harriet Sansom Harris.
Werewolf by Night is now available on the Disney+ digital platform.
