Beyond the adaptation of the suit from The New 52 comics, the absence of Superman’s red trunks goes beyond the comic book adaptations
With the premiere of Man of Steel in 2013, it was noticed that in the film by filmmaker Zack Snyder a different design of Superman’s suit was presented, where the mythical red pants were conspicuous by their absence.

Why was this garment not seen? The short answer points to The New 52. The more concrete answer goes beyond the comics adaptation.
When The Man of Steel debuted in the year 1939 in the pages of Action Comics #1, Superman’s suit had the famous red pants, in reference to the strong men of the circuses, one of the inspirations of Joe Shuster to refer to the hulking strength of DC’s first superhero.
After the Flashpoint event, which restarted the mythology of the DC Universe, Jim Lee was in charge of redesigning Superman’s suit, which looked like armor, but the red pants disappeared.
Were red shorts contemplated in Man of Steel?
When Zack Snyder auditioned for Henry Cavul, the filmmaker took a series of photos of the Briton wearing Christopher Reeve’s suit for camera tests. In this suit the red shorts were an essential element.
For Man of Steel, Zack Snyder had the idea to incorporate the redesign of Superman’s suit seen in The New 52 stage, but with the addition of red shorts, but this just stuck to an idea.
Snyder commissioned his art team to redefine the aesthetics of the inhabitants of Krypton, who wore robes, combat suits and armor, which sported in the center the logos of the different houses to which they belonged, such as the S, which is the symbol of the House El.
The suit that Superman wears would be an undergarment of sorts, and on earth, Kal-El doesn’t need to wear his battle armor to protect himself. Even in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the black suit Superman wears is an adaptation of the black suit the Man of Steel was “revived” in in 1994, and the suit from The New 52.
In the comics, Superman got his red shorts back in 2018, with the release of Action Comics #1000, while on the big screen it is unknown when Henry Cavill will return as Superman, as well as the fate of the garment.
