If we talk about icons of television history, it is impossible not to mention Sarah Michelle Gellar. The actress earned a place in our seriéphile hearts starring in ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ but could not find another role that equaled the success of the legendary series and practically disappeared from the audiovisual scene. What happened to Sarah Michelle Gellar?
television vampire slayer
Sarah Michell Gellar was born in 1977, in New York. She is of Jewish descent, during her childhood she was a figure skater and a black belt in taekwondo. Their debut before the cameras was with only four yearsin a Burger King ad, which was followed by a role in the TV movie ‘An invasion of privacy’.
Over the next several years, Gellar continued to do commercials, as well as modeling and some minor roles in movies and television series. Her first relevant role would come in the miniseries ‘A Woman Named Jackie’ and the series ‘Swans Crossing’.
1997 was the key year of his career. At the age of 20, the actress starred in ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, the Joss Whedon series that was a reboot of the homonymous film, scripted by Whedon himself and directed by Fran Kuzui. Although he initially auditioned for Cordelia, he eventually landed the lead role in what was a true television phenomenonwhich remained on the air for 7 seasons until the end of 2003.
Gellar became a benchmark and, in fact, the same year the series premiered, he participated in two other iconic horror film titles: ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’along with Freddie Prinze Jr (her current husband) and Jennifer Love Hewitt (another icon of two-thousand-year fantasy series with ‘Ghost Whisperer’), and ‘Scream 2’the sequel to Wes Craven’s slasher classic.
Without a doubt, a peak in his career that was followed by successes that were not so resounding but also earned their place in the collective memory, such as ‘Little Warriors’, ‘Cruel intentions’the two live-actions of ‘Scooby-Doo’, the remake of ‘The Scream’ and, of course, his sporadic appearances in ‘Angel’spin-off of ‘Buffy’.
Hiatus and return
Once the series that consecrated her concluded, her career gradually deflated. She tried to give new jump to the small screen starring in ‘Ringer’, an intriguing series where she played two twins and which was canceled after only one season that ended unfinished.
But the real break in her career came with another series that stayed in a single season: ‘The Crazy Ones’, in 2014, where she played the daughter of robin-williams. The death of the actor made him rethink his career and take a break to spend more time with your family.
For a season, she focused more on her role as a voice actress, in series like ‘Robot Chicken’, ‘The Simpsons’, ‘Star Wars Rebels’ and ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation’, in addition to making cameos in the TV movie of ‘Cruel intentions’ and in an episode of ‘Big Bang Theory’.
As for her extra-cinematic facet, Gellar is known for having participated in various charities, for causes such as the fight against breast cancer, world poverty, helping people with AIDS and the Make-A-Wish foundation. Also co-founded Foodstirs, an organic food chain who sells through e-commerce.
Almost 10 years have passed since your last relevant job as an actress before the screen (and almost 20 since the end of the series that gave her fame) until we have been able to see her again in a leading role. Gellar is back with ‘Revenge Now’, one of the latest Netflix releases, and ‘Clerks III’, the new installment of the saga that Kevin Smith started in 1994.
Gellar also has another project in the pipeline and it is none other than ‘Wolf Pack’, the ‘Teen Wolf’ spin-off series that will arrive in 2023. Again a supernatural teen drama, with which we hope the actress is back to stay.
