Like wildfire, the information on the cancellation of Batgirl began on social networks, a film that was in the post-production stage, and whose premiere was planned for this year on the HBO Max platform.
The film was shot in the first half of 2022 in Glasgow, Scotland, with Leslie Grace as Batgirl, JK Simmons as Jim Gordon, Brendan Fraser as Firefly, and the return of Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman.
However, Warner Bros. confirmed the cancellation of the project, to which 90 million dollars were invested, 20 more than the budget derived from the Covid protocols that Hollywood is now following.
This is not the end of Batgirl
Officially, a spokesperson for Warner Bros. clarified that the cancellation of the film was due to a strategic adjustment by the new board of directors of the company.
“The decision not to release Batgirl reflects the strategic shift in our leadership when it comes to the DC Universe and HBO Max.”.
This spokesperson assured that although the film was shelved, Leslie Grace will return as Batgirl in the future, since the executives of Warner Bros. and DC Comics are happy with her performance.
“Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actress and this decision is not a reflection of her performance. We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers of Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt and their respective casts and we look forward to collaborating with everyone again in the near future.”
Other productions such as Blue Beetle and Black Canary continue their course. Batgirl joined the Wonder Twins movie as canceled projects.
