Warner and New Line They have closed an agreement that will allow them to make more ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies. For this they have closed a deal with Embracer Group ABthe company that owns the rights to several Tolkien works such as ‘The Lord of the Rings’ or ‘The Hobbit’.
The deal has been announced by David Zaslav, current CEO of Warner Bros Discovery, in a meeting with the company’s shareholders and does not stop confirming a plan that the company already hinted at months ago. Then it was said that Warner wanted to bet on its big franchises again, with Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings as top priorities. They have already fixed one, we’ll see if they can do it with the other.
Warner’s Promise
Of course, from Warner they have wanted to make it clear that they are not interested in redoing what Peter Jackson already told us in the mythical trilogy released between 2001 and 2003. In fact, they have released the following statement giving the first clues as to what their plans are:
Twenty years ago, New Line took an unprecedented leap of faith to bring the incredible stories, characters and world of The Lord of the Rings to the big screen. The result was a series of landmark films that have been embraced by generations of fans. Yet for all the scope and detail of the two trilogies, the vast, complex and dazzling universe dreamed up by JRR Tolkien remains largely unexplored in cinema. The opportunity to invite fans into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honor, and we are delighted to be collaborating with Middle-earth Enterprises and Embracer on this adventure.
The big question lies in knowing exactly what stories Warner wants to tell, because, for example, the rights of ‘The Silmarillion’ they belong to the Tolkien Estate, which limits their possibilities and in turn allowed Amazon to carry out the multi-million dollar series ‘The Rings of Power’.
It will be a mere matter of time before these projects come to fruition, but in the meantime we will always have ‘The War of the Rohirrim’, an animated film whose arrival in theaters is scheduled for 2024.
