Disney + gave us a surprise a few weeks ago by removing ‘Avatar’ from its catalog in a move clearly motivated by its re-release in theaters. That decision has paid off at the box office and it seems that the platform has now decided to do the same with ‘Titanic’, since the film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet also has unexpectedly disappeared from the platform.
I suspect that the good reception of ‘Avatar’ is behind this, because ‘Titanic’ will return to theaters in February 2023 with a remastered version. It is true that the 25th anniversary of the film by james cameron It will take place this December, but surely Disney has taken into account that the additional hook of Valentine’s Day could come in handy to get a few more million.
Let’s remember that ‘Titanic’ currently has a worldwide gross of 2,207 million dollars, which elevates it to the third position in the list of highest-grossing films in history. Second place is occupied by ‘Avengers: Endgame’ with 2,797 million, so there is little to scratch, since it is literally impossible for it to raise so much on its return to theaters.
The other question that remains is when will ‘Titanic’ return to Disney +. There we should also take as a reference to ‘Avatar’, whose date of return to the platform remains unknown. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why Disney + has so far revealed few of the news that will be available to its customers this October. Or maybe wait a little longer to get closer to the imminent release of ‘Avatar: The sense of water’.
