Before the premiere of Batman, Jack Nicholson was a consolidated star in the middle, with two Oscars won before embodying the Dark Knight’s nemesis, in one of the castings that have most convinced fans.
In an interview with Empire, Tim Burton recalls the peculiar way in which he and Jack Nicholson communicated while filming Batman.
“Jack has a very abstract way of talking…he’d say things to me and I’d say, ‘Yeah, I get it,’ and then I’d say to someone, ‘What the hell was he talking about?’ So there was this strange communication: non-linear, non-connective… But it was very clear to me. I felt like we had good communication caveman style“.

Burton pointed out that Jack Nicholson was very generous with the filmmaker and that he always supported him in the production process of Batman.
“Jack protected me and took care of me, kept me going, by not overwhelming me too much with the whole thing… I felt really supported by him in a very deep way. I was young and dealing with a big studio, and he quietly gave me the confidence to do what I had to do. And he, being a supporting voice, had a lot of resonance with the studio. He got me through the whole thing. he gave me strength”.
Michael Keaton agrees with Burton, since Jack Nicholson had a few words to reassure the protagonist, and make it clear that Batman would be an important point in his career.
“Then Jack says, ‘Keats, if this is a hit, you can go out and make four or five flops and not even worry about it.’ And maybe it wasn’t four or five, but you used to get away with three and it didn’t matter”.
Both Tim Burton and Jack Nicholson worked together once again on the 1996 film Mars Attacks.
