It came with a lot of expectation and has managed to be the kind of phenomenon on Netflix that is also a self-fulfilling prophecy. ‘1899’ is the latest from the creators of ‘Dark’, a sample of foreign science fiction that is especially complex due to its labyrinthine plots and ambitious ideas. His new series seeks to maintain his reign in this area, with another type of supernatural and mysterious proposal.
If you have already finished with the powerful German series and your head has not exploded, we have a series of alternative proposals that also combine mystery and science fiction in an ambitious way. Three complex and difficult series, but which have shown similar concerns in the field of the fantastic.
‘Westworld’ (2016)
Created by: Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy. Distribution: Evan Rachel Wood, Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Thandiwe Newton, Jeffrey Wright.
Recently canceled and running out of a final season that would finish fitting the pieces together (or sink everything definitively), ‘Westworld’ started like a shot to lose strength in its self-absorbed circle of abstraction and complexity. Still, it was one of the most different science fiction series that was on the air
Its first season already makes it especially recommendable, an interesting rethinking of ‘Metal Souls’ to explore issues such as identity, artificial intelligence, humanity and the labyrinths of the mind in a dystopia sustained in a deliberately hermetic concept. He wanted to fly too close to the sunwhich prevented it from fulfilling all its promises, but it is the kind of challenge that the most coffee lovers of science fiction value.

‘The OA’ (2016)
Created by: Zal Batmanglij, Brit Marling. Distribution: Brit Marling, Emory Cohen, Jason Isaacs, Patrick Gibson, Ian Alexander.
Before ‘Dark’ arrived and became a sensation despite being difficult and unclassifiable to a certain extent, Netflix already bet on one of the most unique series that has ever premiered. ‘The OA’ stayed in the cult before being able to enjoy the same fate as the German series, which precipitated its abrupt end after two seasons.
With duly posed mysteries and a style so anchored in independent cinema as it tends to bewildering extravagance, ‘The OA’ was destined to generate mixed reactions with its proposal. Regardless of whether her reflections are better articulated or worse, she really took advantage of the unpaved ground that was Netflix pre-algorithm to try something different.

‘Counterpart’ (2017)
Created by: Justin Marks. Distribution: JK Simmons, Harry Lloyd, Nazanin Boniadi, Olivia Williams, Sara Serraiocco.
A little cult gem that masterfully combined science fiction and espionage in the Cold War. A combination that was very confusing and complex, but Justin Marks’ series managed to create one of the most intriguing fictions and best elaborated in its ideasespecially in a masterful first season.
A excellent new look at parallel realities and the multiverse, in a world where two parallel lands have been created and a government worker discovers not only their existence but also the constant tension in which two identical but opposing administrations live. A powerful combo that he handled with elegance and through a superb JK Simmons in his double role.
