London-based studio Beta Design Office designed and built the trophy to coincide with the debut of Formula E’s new GEN3 race car, the fastest, lightest, most powerful and most efficient electric car ever built.
The new trophy’s energy-burst-like design draws heavily on the power characteristics of the GEN3, the third-generation Formula E car that races at the edge of innovation and pushes the frontiers of development in technology. electric vehicles. The first electric open-wheel race car to exceed 200mph, the GEN3 acts as a powerhouse on wheels, generating more than 40% of the energy used in the race during the race itself, and more than doubling the regenerative capacity. from the previous GEN2 car up to 600 kW.
The goal was to create a new iconic racing trophy for the GEN3 era. It was vital that it convey electrification, speed and movement, without sacrificing elegance and modernity.
Beta’s designers were inspired by the actual components of the first all-electric world championship motorsport. The trophy consists of 44 fins: 22 large ones represent the 22 drivers who compete in Formula E and 22 small ones represent their cars on the track. The shape of the trophy is inspired by car spokes, heat sinks and power cable cores, combined with the flowing lines of the body panels.
Anodized aluminum was chosen as the main material for its qualities of lightness and rigidity, which also allowed for a precise combination of gold and silver colours. It was essential that the final creation be high-end and top quality, in keeping with the FIA World Championship status.
