UK banknotes will have a new face for the first time in 70 years, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the accession of King Charles III to the throne.
The British royal family confirmed that the new banknotes will enter circulation in mid-2024, through a publication made on their social networks, in which they confirm that Carlos III will become the second monarch to appear on them.
“Today, the Bank of England has unveiled designs for new banknotes featuring His Majesty the King. They are expected to enter circulation in the UK in mid-2024. Although the image of the Monarch has appeared on coins since the eighth century, banknotes are a much more recent invention. The British sovereign has only appeared on British banknotes since 1960, making Her Majesty the second monarch, and the first king, to appear on currency in this way “, the publication reads.
Months ago it was explained that both the banknotes with the image of Queen Elizabeth II and those of her son will circulate at the same time in Great Britain due to the gradual entry of the new papers.
The face of Carlos III will appear on the front of the banknotes and in the form of a medallion in the transparent security window thereof, according to the images shown by the monetary institution.
The portrait is an engraving made from a photo “provided by the royal family in 2013” and has been completed in recent months, with the monarch’s approval, a Bank of England spokesman told AFP.
It is important to note that the first coins with the effigy of Carlos III entered into circulation at the beginning of December, at the request of the British royal family.
