The first episode of Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon showed us a different version of the Iron Throne, something that the showrunners of the series explain
One of the series whose premiere was one of the most anticipated is House of the Dragon, the prequel to Game of Thrones, the story where the seven kingdoms face bloody battles to ascend to the Iron Throne.
If you watched the first episode of House of the Dragon, you surely noticed some familiar elements, like the coveted Iron Throne, which looks different from the one we saw in Game of Thrones,
This version of the throne is larger and bulkier, and looks more like what George RR Martin envisioned in the A Song of Ice and Fire series.
Although this change, according to Ryan J. Condal, one of the showrunners of House of the Dragon, the shape of the Iron Throne changes by
“We went into the series knowing that this was a time of great decline. We consider this to be the apex of the Targaryen empire, so we really wanted to communicate this idea of wealth and prosperity and the fact that there were six years of peace. The Targaryens were really able to develop all the nice things that happened: times of peace, statues and art, roads and fountains”.
Same essence, different form
The essence of the Throne remains intact, according to the showrunners of the show. Only the time changes, and therefore this version is more voluminous.
“If you look very closely, you will see that the original throne is right there in the middle of it all. Only elements are added and increased, suggesting that the story changes things at some point in the intervening time”
Based on the book “Fire and Blood” by George RR Martin, the series, set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of the Targaryen house.
The main cast is made up of Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Fabien Frankel and Rhys Ifans.
The first season of Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon will premiere on August 21 on both the HBO channel and the HBO Max platform.
