The world of beauty, like that of fashion, is governed by trends that come and go. Knowing that box braids were a hairstyle that invaded street style with originality or the French manicure was for many years the quintessential manicure, now comes a “new trend that there is nothing new and that has put Hailey Bieber in one of the latest social media controversies. Under the name of brownie glazed lipsmany magazines have rushed to name this technique as novel trend, however Beyoncé’s make-up artist -and Creative Director of L’Oréal Paris USA-, Sir Jhon, has been quick to explain the beginning (and the frustration) of the birth of this technique.
Hailey Bieber and the video that triggered everything
A few weeks ago Hailey Bieber showed a video on TikTok where she wore brown lips under the title “ready for all things fall, including my brownie glazed lips”, without giving credit to the origin of this 90s aesthetic among the black community. and Latin. A few days ago Sir John, Beyoncé’s makeup artist, wanted to clarify the controversy surrounding this trend that people have catapulted as “new”. With statements that suggest that this is more of a cultural appropriation, the make-up artist has spoken with Diet Prada to explain the reason for this “misunderstanding”.
The controversy surrounding the brownie glazed lips
We go back to the 90s where “all you had was a lip liner and a transparent gloss” assured the makeup artist. “We had to get creative and try things in an unorthodox way due to the lack of products for Black and Latino people.” The problem is that with a world where trends come and go, new generations appear that can forget (or ignore) what in the past was a revolution. “Everyone feels like they struck gold for the first time. That’s why we have to look and say ‘hey, we’ve been here’”.
Back then, black and brunette women accentuated their full lips with brown eyeliner, and on more than one occasion that was the epicenter of ridicule for society’s beauty standards. “Now that it’s on white bodies, it’s seen as a trend.”
And although the makeup artist Queen B believes that today all trends can be adopted by everyone -without calling them cultural appropriation-, one has to be cautious when wearing them. On this occasion, the brownie glazed lips they should be two shades deeper than our skin tones and not a brown eyeliner as such. “The goal is to highlight the silhouette of your lips.”
