In December 2020 Kevin Feige announced that prior to the premiere of GOTG Vol. 3, a film that integrates Phase 5 of the MCU, Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special would be launched, a 50-minute program that has garnered good reviews.
Although Gunn was fired by Marvel Studios in 2018, the filmmaker and the La Casa de la Ideas studio resumed their employment relationship to bring a third film, which will feature different situations, which were presented in the Holiday Special.
The elements that connect Vol 3 and the Holiday Special
In an interview with comicbook, James Gunn revealed how the Holiday Special has elements that will connect with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
“You’re obviously going to learn a lot about where the Guardians have been in recent years… You’re going to see how they now inhabit Knowhere. They have a new ship called Bowie. They have a dog that is part of their crew now, that has telekinesis, named Cosmo.”.
For Gunn, the Holiday Special is important because it establishes new elements in the team’s canon.
“In a way, the Holiday Special was a Trojan horse for me to sneak in things that become important in Volume 3, so I don’t have to spend a lot of time at the beginning of that movie explaining it.”.
The filmmaker wanted this special to become a festive appetizer for what is to come in Volume 3, where the team we met in 2014 will come to an end.
“It really is the end of the trilogy for all the Guardians… Volume 3 is really a very emotional movie. And he tells this story about Rocket and where he came from and where he’s going, and how that ties in with all the other”.
Before Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot hit the big screen with the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie in 2023, watch the Guardians get up to some spirited antics in a new original special, created for Disney+, during the Christmas season.
Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special is now available on Disney Plus.
