Annette O’Toole, the Lana Lang of Superman III, recalls the shock of the moment she saw Christopher Reeve on the set.
You probably remember her as Martha Kent, Clark’s mom, in Smallville. And perhaps less remembered as Lana Lang in Superman III. However, the one who still fondly recalls the moment she saw Christopher Reeve in Superman’s attire is Annette O’Toole.

In 1983, O’Toole replaced Diane Sherry Case, who brought her to life at the start of the franchise in 1978, in the role of Lana Lang. Her assignment was to replace Losi Lane as Superman’s love interest, Margot Kidder, due to problems with the producers, saw his participation in the film reduced.
In a recent interview with Inside of You, Michael Rosenbaum’s (you remember him as Lex Luthor on Smallville) YouTube talk show, Annette O’Toole shared her impression of the first time she saw Christopher Reeve in Superman attire.

The actress says that at the beginning of filming they only did scenes involving Clark Kent and Lana, and that they passed before seeing him in the iconic superhero costume. However, the impression that the meeting made on him still today, almost 40 years later, moves him.

This is what Annette O’Toole said
In the video, the actress confesses to being a big fan of Superman since she was a child, so when she saw the actor in the suit, her surprise was great:
“The first time I walked onto the set I didn’t see him because they had a separate room for him when he was playing Superman because he had to put on a lot of makeup and a wig and that sort of thing… I had seen him on screen as Superman, but not in person. So I’m walking to the set and the stage was very dark. I hear a voice say, ‘Hello, Annette.’ I look to my right, and it was like looking at a mountain. I’m not kidding, I started stuttering and it gave me the creeps. There was Superman. He was in the whole gear and, talking about it now, I get chills thinking about it. It was amazing… It was the first time I really felt like they didn’t know who he was with. It wasn’t Chris Reeve. He spoke in a different way, and he had a totally different energy.”
