The race of robert englund changed forever with the premiere of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’, since Freddy Krueger he quickly became one of the most memorable villains in movie history. Englund played him for the last time in ‘Freddy against Jason’ and now he wanted to make it clear that he will not give life to this sadistic murderer again, he has explained what went wrong in the remake and has chosen the actor he wants to succeed him in the role.
“Freddy is not like that”
Mercilessly beaten upon its release, the 2010 remake of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ remains the last time we saw Freddy Krueger on the big screen. There he was played by Jackie Earle Haley and Englund has no complaints about her performance, but she does point out a very clear mistake the movie made:
I have always thought that Freddy is described as a child killer. They turned him into a pedophile and I think that Freddy is not like that. By taking him to such a dark place, there was no room to play with Freddy’s personality.
In addition, Englund proposes the following idea in the event that a new ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ movie is made‘ currently’: “You would have to deal with technology and culture. For example, if one of the girls was an influencer, it would be interesting if Freddy somehow haunted her subconscious and manifested himself, perhaps exploiting everyone who followed her.” Of course, do not count on him to interpret Krueger again:
I can’t do more than one take of fight scenes anymore. I have a bad neck and back, and arthritis in my right wrist. So I have to hang up the suit, but I’d love to do a cameo.
With that in mind and the fact that Haley is highly unlikely to bring Krueger back to life, the actor he is quite clear who he would like to see wearing Freddy’s unmistakable glove:
I know that he respects the genre and is a good physical actor. I think about the silences and how Kevin Bacon moves… it would be interesting.
