The Mexican actress Karla Souza has been a trend in recent days due to the interview she gave for the podcast Creativeled by the youtuber Roberto Martínez, where he shared some experiences that, for many users of social networks, were the cause of controversy.
It all arose when a fragment of said interview was shared on social networks, in which Karla Souza can be seen defining herself as a “woman of color” when talking about her work in Hollywood, for which she was criticized.
In the long talk with Roberto Martínez, Karla talked about many topics, including what it has been like to work in film and television in the United States. In her response, she indicated that the work dynamics there are very different, even before starting to record a project.
When I arrived (in Los Angeles) I auditioned and they made me sign a role, when they hadn’t even given me the role yet. They told me: ‘In case the paper is given to you, you sign here that you accept that we pay you this for six years of your life, you cannot do anything else, you have to do only this.’ (…) What bargaining power do you have? Zero. I had never had a job in the United States.
In addition to this, Karla pointed out that when the recordings of the new series began, she realized that the “white” actors, that is, the Americans, were paid much more than her, for being Mexican, and another African-American girl, which is why the actress expressed her disagreement with the filmmakers.
They were paying more than the two women, well, me, the Mexican one, and the African American one. I made a f * nche p * do … I went so far as to say ‘I know you are paying more to white people and I understand that this contract was made before the summer of George Floyd, where you did not understand how racism works, but now we know , then they should rectify, so that the women of color in the series are paid like white people.’
A part of this statement caused Internet users disagreement, ignoring the context of saying “white people” and that the actress assumed herself as “people of color”. However, there were those who stated that it was enough for the actress to use the term “Mexican” or “Latina”.
‘There is nothing more pathetic than Woke culture. Prietos, women, LGBT+, trans, playing the victims to take advantage’; ‘This has already gotten out of hand. Now it turns out that Karla Souza is colored’; “By Mexican standards, of course Karla Souza is white Mexican, but in the USA she is not white, she is simply Mexican.”
However, despite the criticism, there were those who came to his defense, such as the actor Mauricio Martínez, who clarified to the thousands of Internet users that the fragment of the interview was taken out of context and clarified that in the United States “anyone who who is not a white American is considered a person of color”, that is, “we are put in the same category as African Americans, Native Americans, Latinos, Asians”.
On the other hand, it is important to note that when the actress expressed her disagreement with the filmmakers of the series, two weeks after that talk, both her and the African-American actress had their salaries raised. She is currently working at home economys from Amazon Prime, in which she plays Marina.
It should be noted that in the face of criticism from users of social networks, the actress has not issued any reaction in this regard.
