The famous bachata singer Romeo Santos is in the eye of the hurricane for his single ‘Suegra’. The song was censored by the National Commission for Public Entertainment and Radiophony (CNEPR) of the Dominican Republic for its “inappropriate, inconsiderate and outrageous” language.and the artist has responded forcefully.
Bringing forward the release of the official video was part of the reaction of the American artist of Dominican origin. In the audiovisual, he pays tribute to the late Dominican comedian and singer Luisito Martí and his character ‘Balbuena’.
In the video clip, Romeo Santos introduces himself to a woman as his daughter’s boyfriend. The role of the mother-in-law is played by the Dominican actress and singer Cecilia García.
In the character of the mother-in-law, they recreate the mother who prefers a better match for her daughter and wants nothing to do with her boyfriend. The urban Bulin 47 also participates in the video and has an unexpected ending that has undoubtedly left many surprised.
The censorship of the song by the CNEPR was criticized by Romeo Santos, who called those responsible “yellow and ignorant” for not noticing the black humor of his song and for not understanding that his production ‘Fórmula Vol.3’ only seeks to “highlight Dominicanness.”
“You have to be very yellowish, ignorant, sound engineers or all three to not be able to notice that the song as well as the video was only intended to pay homage ONCE AGAIN to Dominicanness”, he wrote at the bottom of a fragment of the video that he posted on Instagram.
The singer-songwriter also pointed out that the visual work was recorded in September 2022 and that he decided to advance it after the single was censored.
“It was not in my plans to release it for now. However, as a result of this censorship in the DR stations, I am going to advance my plans “sentenced.
In days gone by, the ‘King of Bachata’ expressed his pride in representing Dominican culture in his music and highlighted the creativity and black humor that characterizes Dominicans. He also congratulated his country on National Independence Day, which was celebrated on February 27.
Despite the fact that ‘Suegra’ cannot be heard on Dominican radio, the song is still available on all digital platforms for the enjoyment of its fans. Romeo has made it clear that he will not be intimidated by censorship and will continue to stand up for his music and culture.
